Eglise Saint-Julien de Domfront

13 juni, 2019
Église Saint-Julien de Domfront Info: After a first church built in the 12th century, a second built in 1748, Domfront has a third church dedicated to St. Julian between 1924 and 1926. Built with a reinforced concrete structure, it is of byzantine inspiration, its décor is due to the mosaicist Jean Gaudin, the figure of Christ Pantocrator decorates the apse of the choir. His appearance surprised me, but printing is multiplied when you enter the building. The mosaics are outstanding (they are everywhere: walls, apse, apses, way of the cross, altar, baptismal). The stained glass windows and windows are unique because of the concrete structure. This unique church was consecrated on 30 September 1933, labeled "heritage of the 20th century", and classified as historical monuments in 1993. Unfortunately, due to the damages of reinforced concrete, it had to be closed in 2006 and restored from 2011 to 2013, then open again to the public since September 29, 2013. This church is worth visiting to appreciate its originality and quality of its decoration.
