Gunnuhver

7 december, 2013
Gunnuhver hot spring is one of the most famous high temperature geothermal areas in Reykjanes. Temperatures of over 300° C. have been recorded beneath Gunnuhver. Although Gunnuhver is referred to as a hot spring area, only fumaroles and mudpots are present. Gunnuhver is an exception to other geothermal areas because the groundwater here is 100% seawater. The name Gunnuhver comes from a woman called Guðrún. She was a spectre wich caused a great disturbance until Eiríkur Magnússon, priest at Vogsósar set a trap for her and she fell into the spring.
