I will survive! - Celebrating life - I am still a woman - Uit de reeks: Sofie, I will survive, I am still a woman, #komoptegenkanker. October = breast cancer awareness month. Yeah, we all know it and we are all cordially invited by the marketing machinery to donate and participate .... As a survivor, I always have mixed feelings about the campaigns. Initially, the pink ribbon and think pink projects aimed at raising awareness. It is vitally important to take early signs of cancer seriously and seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Breast cancer is curable, but only if it is detected early. I owe my life to this. If I would have ignored the little lump I felt, and stayed away from the GP for a month longer to get it checked, I wouldn't sit here writing this text. Also, the longer cancer carries around undetected, the more havoc it breaches in your body and the more invasive the treatment will be. And the more likely your quality of life will be impaired afterwards. So, with respect to the awareness goal: YES! Please be aware and take care of yourself. The words are what matter, but in our current society, an image says more .... I'm not a model and I'm not perfect, but I gladly take off my clothes from time to time to get photographed. When I do this, I hope that I can help other women who are confronted with surgery that - although it is not easy at all - it is possible to overcome the pain, the grief, the shame, the fear of rejection and all the negative emotions that come along with this kind of mutilation. It IS possible to regain some quality of life and even joy. A common saying is : if you survive this ordeal, you learn to appreciate the little things in life. Yeah!
